2018 Municipal Drainage Program open house

On Thursday, Mar. 22/2018 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. the Township of Wainfleet will be holding its Annual Drainage Program Open House at the Wainfleet Firefighters Memorial Community Hall to provide residents with information related to Municipal Drains and their maintenance in the Township.

The Township has over 250 kilometers of Municipal Drains which provide invaluable drainage and flooding control services to its rural landowners. Under the Drainage Act, R.S.O. 1990, the Township is responsible for the maintenance and repair of these drains.

In order to maintain this network of drains the Township has an active drainage program, which includes the regular inspection of the drains and undertaking any maintenance activities that are required. Approximately 20 to 30 kilometers of drains are maintained each year and this generally includes brushing the designated working zone, and the removal of collected debris and sediment from the bottoms of the drains to ensure they remain effective. Work may also include the removal of blockages from fallen trees, brush and nuisance animals such as beavers.

“This year we are going to focus on landowner requirements and best management practices on Municipal Drains. Although the actual maintenance of the drains is the responsibility of the Township, there are lots of things residents and landowners can do to help us keep our drains in good working condition,” said Drainage Superintendent
Jason Culp. “This includes keeping working zones clear of obstructions and maintaining or implementing buffer strips to minimize soil movement into the drains which increases the need to remove accumulated sediment. We also encourage the landowners to let us know anytime they see something impacting a drain on their property.”

Township residents wanting more information should contact the Municipal Office at (905) 899-3463 or refer to the Township’s drainage webpage at http://www.wainfleet.ca/government/operations/drainage.
