Blackhawks encounter with Meteors ends with OT win

Fort Erie Meteors captain Brady Lee comes from behind the Thorold Blackhawks net on a play the ended in him putting his second goal past Thorold Blackhawks goaltender Anthony Tremonte in GOJHL hockey action Saturday night in Fort Erie.

The Thorold Blackhawks and the Fort Erie Meteors Saturday night clash ended in a second overtime period 3 – 2 win for the Blackhawks in GOJHL hockey action Saturday Nov. 11/2017 in Fort Erie.

The game began with a ceremonial puck drop between the two team captains featuring a delegation of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 71 Fort Erie and the Canadian Forces to celebrate Remembrance Day.

Brendan Charlton put the Thorold Blackhawks on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal at 5:05.

In honour of Remembrance Day, members of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 71 Fort Erie Sam Stark and Sandy Merson along with Ridgeway native Cpl. Dalton Matiasz of 3 RCR on duty with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment performed a puck dropping ceremony at the start of the game with team captains Brendan Charlton of the Thorold Blackhawks and Brady Lee of the Fort Erie Meteors.

The Fort Erie Meteors came back to end the first period with a 2 – 1 lead, both Fort Erie goals scored by team captain Brady Lee. His first came on the power play at 12:59 assisted by Andrew Somerville and Cail Cirillo. His second goal came at 17:35 assisted by Daniel Nardi.

Thorold tied the game up late in the second period with Trevor Neumann’s goal at 16:10 assisted by Matthew Chard.

With no goals in the third period, the game was forced into overtime where no scoring forced a second overtime period.

James Guest broke the tie just 38 seconds into the second overtime period assisted by Spencer Blackwell and Griffen Fox earning Thorold the win.

  • Star #3: Andrew Somerville, Fort Erie Meteors

In Friday night’s action in Niagara Falls, the Canucks won 5 – 4 in overtime.

  • Daniel Aspro, assisted by Tanner Lynds and Nolan Lynds
  • Kevin Weaver-Vitale, assisted by Andrew Somerville and Marco Lariccia
  • Mike Masotti, assisted by Spencer Cosway and Brady Lee
  • Aidan McLeod, assisted by Mike Masotti and Cail Cirillo.

The Thorold Blackhawks lost a close contest to the Ancaster Avalanche Thursday Nov. 9/2017 on their home ice. The final score after the second period of overtime was 3 – 2 for Ancaster.

Thorold’s two goals came from Spencer Blackwell. The first was assisted by Austin Jenson and Devon Thibodeau. The second was assisted by James Guest and Matthew Dolan.

The Fort Erie Meteors next action is Tuesday Nov. 14/2017 in Buffalo against the Regals. They then face the Welland Junior Canadians in Fort Erie Saturday Nov. 18/2017 at 7:15 p.m. Sunday Nov. 19/2017 they will be in Pelham facing the Panthers at 2:30 p.m.

The Thorold Blackhawks will be on home ice again on Thursday Nov. 16/2017 at 7 p.m. as they face off against the St. Catharines Falcons.
