Celebrate ‘April Pools Day’ Saturday in St. Catharines

Get in the pool Saturday Apr. 7/2018 when we celebrate April Pools Day at the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre.

The Lifesaving Society and the City of St. Catharines will help families get ready for splashing good times this summer in the pool and in open water with a Leisure Swim and fun, water-smart activities, Saturday Apr. 7/2018 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“April Pools Day is all about promoting swimming as a life skill and helping residents to be confident and comfortable in the water,” said Jennifer Green, the City’s aquatics supervisor. “Learning basic swimming skills and water safety will help swimmers enjoy themselves more because they will know what to do if they suddenly begin struggling to keep their heads above water.”

According to the Lifesaving Society, nearly two-thirds of drowning fatalities in Ontario between 2010 and 2014 happened during recreational activities, including swimming or playing near water. Knowing water-safety basics can help prevent most water-related injuries and deaths, says Green.

April Pools Day features a leisure swim, water safety trivia, CPR, drowning prevention and other self-help demonstrations, PFD/life jacket fittings and more fun. Families can also put their water safety skills to the test with Family Swim to Survive activities.

Admission is by a minimum donation of $1. Proceeds from the event go to the Lifesaving Society’s drowning prevention campaign.

The City also offers swimming lessons and aquatic leadership programs. Online registration opened for St. Catharines residents on Tuesday Mar. 20/2018 at 6 p.m. Visit www.stcatharines.ca/SwimLessons for more information.
