City of Welland celebrates Volunteer Week

According to volunteer.ca, 12.7 million people are making a difference across Canada through their volunteer efforts. Volunteer Week is April 15-21/2018 and the City of Welland is looking forward to celebrating all of the amazing volunteers who make a difference in our community.

The City of Welland has a generous pool of volunteers who assist with city events, the Welland Community Wellness Complex (WCWC), and the Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC). Today’s volunteers are not only looking to help shape their communities, they are also looking to expand their skills and find deep and meaningful connections.

This year, the city is broadening its volunteer recruitment to assist with high-level competitions on the recreational waterway. The city is hosting an array of flatwater competitions at the Welland International Flatwater Centre south and north courses that will warrant a variety of abilities. City staff are encouraging the public to get involved and bring their skills, or learn new skills and volunteer at the WIFC.

“Our volunteers are the heart of this city,” said Krista Bowie, Community Development and Volunteer Coordinator. “They facilitate all our drop-in programs and help make city-run events successful and enjoyable for all who attend. This week our volunteers will be acknowledged by city staff and officials for their dedication, skills, and generous contributions to the community.”

“We want to grow our volunteer family this summer and give people the opportunity to develop new talents at the WIFC this competition season,” said Erin Carl, Canoe Polo Welland 2018 Coordinator. “We’re hosting five outstanding flatwater competitions this year that will require volunteers. We want community members to join us in creating Welland’s sporting legacy.”

City of Welland volunteers will gather for the yearly Volunteer Appreciation Night on Wednesday Apr. 18/2018, and WIFC volunteers will be celebrated at a special volunteer appreciation party with the closing of the ICF Canoe Polo World Championships.
