At the Wainfleet Arena this summer, children can dribble basketballs, build obstacle courses, play parachute games, and much more – all free of cost.

For the second year in a row, the FITastic Drop-in Playtime program is being offered thanks to the dedication and support of staff from the Wainfleet Arena and Wainfleet Township Public Library.

This program provides kids with a safe space for unstructured playtime so that they can stay physically active throughout the summer.

“My kids really like to come to FITastic to play,” said Wainfleet resident, Kaitlyn Newhouse. “It’s great that there’s a space for them to play right here in Wainfleet.”

Children under 10 years old must have a parent or guardian accompany them. Waivers must be signed at the registration desk before children can play. Recreation programming surveys are also available for parents and children to fill out at the registration desk.

The Arena is divided into age-specific sections. There is equipment for children of all ages to use, which was purchased through funding from Theme One (“Run. Jump. Play. Every Day.”) of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge Niagara, a provincial initiative that aims to keep children active and healthy.

Jeremy Worrall, Recreation Coordinator at the Wainfleet Arena, says that there was much success with the FITastic program last summer during its inaugural year.

“The equipment we have allow kids to be creative and have fun all while staying active,” he said. “There are also social benefits to this program, as kids are interacting with others and making friends. We are looking forward to welcoming many children through the doors of the Arena to enjoy our FITastic program this summer.”

FITastic is running every Friday in July, as well as August 4, 11 and 18, at the Wainfleet Arena (31917 Park St., Wainfleet). Children can play from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
