Game one goes to Whalers in Russell Cup Championship

Niagara Whalers logoThe Niagara Whalers have taken game one in the GMHL Russell Cup Championship series wining 7 – 1 over the North Division champions the Parry Sound Islanders Wednesday Mar. 22 in Parry Sound.

Parry Sound’s Milan Prusek scored their only goal at 7:38 in the first period assisted by Ervin Halasz and Jan Vyoral.

Raifs Circenis put the Whalers on the scoreboard at 17:01 assisted by Tyler Jackson. Matt Hore put the Whalers ahead 2 – 1 at 19:45, assists went to Blake Luscombe and Tyler Hore.

Niagara added three unanswered goals in the second period giving them a 5 – 1 lead.

Travis Valvo led off scoring in the second with his goal at 2:54 assisted by Blake Luscombe. Manny Manns connected on the power play at 6:02, assists went to Blake Luscombe and Matt Hore. Manny Manns connected for his second goal at 10:40, assisted again by Matt Hore and Blake Luscombe.

The Whalers added two more goals in the third period to give them the 7 – 1 win.

Paolo Sivilotti netted one on the power play at 2:15 assisted by Zack Lansfield and Broderick Kelly. Matt Hore scored their last goal at 18:10 assisted by Blake Luscombe and Callahan Moretti.

The three stars of the game came from the Niagara Whalers:

  • Star #1: Matt Hore with two goals and two assists.
  • Star #2: Blake Luscombe with five assists.
  • Star #3: Manny Manns with two goals.

Game 2 is Friday Mar. 24 in Port Colborne at 7:30 p.m., game three in Parry Sound Saturday Mar. 25th and game four is scheduled for Sunday March. 26th at 7 p.m. at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne.
