Game two of South Division Championship goes to Whalers

The Niagara Whalers have taken game two of the South Division Championship series Friday Mar. 10 in Port Colborne with a 5 – 1 win over the St. George Ravens.

The first period was a back and forth battle ending with the Whalers taking a 1 – 0 lead with a goal from Brandon Cercone late in the period at 17:41, assisted by Blake Luscombe and Tyler Hore.

In the second period, the Whalers took more of a command of the period, scoring three more goals, the period ended with the Whalers leading 4 – 0.

The first came at 2:41, an unassisted goal from Zack Lansfield. David Christopher added the second goal unassisted at 6:57. Christopher also scored the third goal towards the end of the period at 13:22 with assists going to Brandon Cercone and Tyler Hore.

In the third period, Niagara’s Tyler Jackson gave the Whalers a 5 – 0 lead at 2:27 assisted by Tyler Hore and David Christopher.

The Raven’s lone goal came on the power play at 16:25 from Chris Martin assisted by Greg Christmas and Tyler Hill.

The three stars of the game were all from the Niagara Whalers:

  • Star #1: goalie Joel Horodziejczyk with 33sv. for a .971 sv%.
  • Star #2: David Christopher with two goals and one assist.
  • Star #3: Tyler Hore with three assists.

The win gives the Whalers a 2 – 0 in the best-of-seven championship series.

Game three is scheduled for Sunday Mar. 12 in Port Colborne at 7 p.m. Game four takes place Tuesday Mar. 14 in St. George. Game five, if needed, will be Wednesday Mar. 15 in Port Colborne.

The South Division Champions will go on to face the North Division Champions in the Russell Cup.
