Junior Canadians dominate for 7 – 1 win over Panthers

The Welland Junior Canadians dominated the Pelham Panthers on the ice Sunday Sept. 17/2017 earning a 7 – 1 win in GOJHL hockey action in Welland.

Anthony Grigg led off the Junior Canadians scoring attack on the power play at 2:15 in the first period, assists went to Matthew Giannini and Tanner McEachern. Bailey Stumpo scored the lone Pelham goal at 5:09, assisted by Adam Scholz. Brendon Rylott gave Welland the 2 – 1 lead at 13:18, assisted by Daelyn Minovski.

The Junior Canadians added two more late period goals in the second period for the 4 – 1 lead. The first came from Matthew Giannini at 17:41 with assists going to Tanner McEachern and Jordan Simpson. The second came from Alexander Dameski at 18:33, assists going to Alexander Gonyou and Nick Bisser.

Welland added three more goals in the third period lead off by Alexander Dameski’s power play goal at 7:25, assists went to Ryan Israel and Brendan Rylott. Tanner McEachern added a power play goal at 17:50, assisted by Noah Blakely and Daelyn Minovski. Noah Blakely connected for Welland’s seventh goal at 18:27, assisted by Tanner McEachern and Daelyn Minovski.

The three stars of the game were:

  • STAR 1: McEachern, Tanner (WEC)
  • STAR 2: Dameski, Alexandar (WEC)
  • STAR 3: Minovski, Daelyn (WEC)

Earlier this week, the Welland Junior Canadians found themselves with a 3 – 3 tie after two overtime periods Thursday Sept. 14/2017 against the Thorold Blackhawks in Thorold.

The Welland Junior Canadians next action will be in Buffalo on Tuesday Sept. 19, then in St. Catharines on Friday Sept. 22 before returning home Sunday Sept. 24 against the Niagara Falls Canucks.

For the Pelham Panthers, the game was the second loss this weekend after falling 7 – 3 to the Caledonia Corvairs Saturday Sept. 16 in Caledonia.

The Panthers are next in action Saturday Sept. 23 in Ancaster against the Avalanche, then at home in Pelham on Sunday Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. against the Thorold Blackhawks.

In other Golden Horseshoe Division games this weekend, St. Catharines beat Niagara Falls 6 – 0 on Friday night. On Saturday night the Fort Erie Meteors downed Buffalo Regals 4 – 3 Ancaster Avalanche beat Thorold Blackhawks 9 – 5. On Sunday night, the St. Catharines Falcons beat the Niagara Falls Canucks 4 – 2.

Currently in the Golden Horseshoe Division, the Welland Junior Canadians hold the second place spot, the Pelham Panthers and Fort Erie Meteors are tied for fourth. For current standings see the GOJHL website: http://pointstreaksites.com/view/gojhl .
