Junior Canadians take Meteors with 5 – 4 win

The Welland Junior Canadians won 5 – 4 over the visiting Fort Erie Meteors in Sunday night GOJHL hockey action Oct. 22/2017.

Welland had a commanding 4 – 1 lead by the end of the second period, a strong Meteor third period nearly forced the game to an overtime period.

Matthew Giannini put in the first Welland goal at 1:14 in the first period assisted by Tanner McEachern and Philip Liakakos. Matt Hobbs added their second at 14:36 assisted by Alexander Dameski and Maliek Powell.

Fort Erie got on the scoreboard at 10:35 in the second period with a power play goal from Marco Lariccia assisted by Brady Lee and Daniel Nardi.

Welland’s Matthew Giannini netted his second goal of the night on a power play at 14:29 with assists going to Brendan Rylott and Daelyn Minovski. Minovski then put one between the pipes with just nineteen seconds left in the period giving Welland the 4 – 1 lead, assists went to Ryan Israel and Maliek Powell.

Fort Erie started strong in the third period with a goal at 1:29 from Tyson Moore assisted by Tanner Lynds and Brady Lee. Garrett Jennings added a power play goal at 3:30 assisted by Marco Lariccia and Drew Passero putting the Meteors within one goal until Welland’s Anthony Grigg connected at 4:35 assisted by Maliek Powell and Ryan Israel gave Welland a two goal lead that lasted most of the third period. Fort Erie’s Alex McAteer closed the gap to one with his goal at 16:57 assisted by Tanner Lynds and Michael Fazio.

The three stars of the game were:

  • Star #2: Ryan Israel, Welland Junior Canadians
  • Star #3: Marco Lariccia, Fort Erie Meteors

The Welland Junior Canadians week ahead in hockey will have them in Ancaster Thursday Oct. 26/2017, then at home on Saturday Oct. 28/2017 at 7 p.m. against the Pelham Panthers. They are on home ice again Sunday Oct. 29/2017 at 7 p.m. against the Niagara Falls Canucks.

The Fort Erie Meteors will be in Buffalo Tuesday Oct. 24/2017 to face the Regals, then in Niagara Falls on Friday Oct. 27/2017 against the Canucks, then on home ice Saturday Oct. 28/2017 at 7:15 p.m. against the Ancaster Avalanche.
