Junior Canadians win battle with Panthers 7 – 4

The Welland Junior Canadians won a 7 – 4 battle against the Pelham Panthers Tuesday Feb. 14 in GOJHL hockey action in Pelham.

Matt Martin put the Junior Canadians on the scoreboard first with a short-handed unassisted goal at 8:25 in the first period.

Pelham came back and took a 2 – 1 lead in the first period after goals from Mathew Shuckett at 14:30, assisted by Quinton Maddock and Logan Freiburger, and a goal from Orion Hexamer at 17:51, assisted by Matt Ruigrok and Noah Caperchione.

Welland tied it up at two apiece with a goal from Ryan Miotto on the power play at 2:19 in the second period, assisted by Michael Tilbury and Matt Martin. Dravin Maye put Welland ahead at 5:41, assisted by Ryan Miotto and Matt Martin.

Pelham’s Colin Elder tied it up on the power play at 9:38 with assists going to Giusten Annetta and Thomas Young.

Welland’s Nathan Ellis gave the Junior Canadians a 4 – 3 lead at 18:02, assisted by Trevor LeDonne and Matt Martin.

Noah Bollert increased the lead to 5 – 3 on the power play at 8:40 in the third period, assisted by Michael Tilbury and Matt Martin. Matt Martin padded the lead with his power play goal at 12:01, assisted by Nick Bisser and Brandon McCorriston.

Pelham’s Bailey Stumpo added the fourth goal for the Panthers at 17:16, assisted by Matt Ruigrok and Orion Hexamer.

An empty net goal by Matt Martin of the Junior Canadians at 18:38, assisted by Noah Bollert and Ryan Miotto, brought the game to the 7 – 4 win for the Junior Canadians.

The three stars of the game were:

  • Star #1: Matt Martin, Welland Junior Canadians.
  • Star #2: Ryan Miotto, Welland Junior Canadians.
  • Star #3: Mathew Shuckett, Pelham Panthers.

Last Sunday night, the Welland Junior Canadians lost 4 – 0 in action against the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks.

The Pelham Panthers will be facing the Ancaster Avalanche Friday Feb. 17 in Pelham, then they play the Buffalo Regals Family Day Monday Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. in Pelham.

The Welland Junior Canadians are next in action Friday Feb. 17 in Niagara Falls against the Cancucks, then they face the Falcons on Sunday Feb. 19 in Welland.
