Mayor Sendzik invites submissions for poetry challenge

The Mayor’s Poetry Challenge is returning this April to celebrate a city where everyone can play.

Mayor Sendzik invites St. Catharines residents to submit an original poem about parks in St. Catharines for the Mayor’s Poetry Challenge. All types of poetry will be accepted – from Shakespearean sonnets to fantastical Dr. Seuss-inspired pieces.

Poems should be sent to poetry@stcatharines.ca by April 17 to be considered. The selected poet will be invited to recite their poem at the April 23 City Council meeting and on social media.

“The poetry challenge is a great way to engage creative writers and use arts and culture to promote reading. This year I want to encourage poetry as a way to celebrate parks throughout our city and what they mean to our citizens. I look forward to reading the park inspired prose,” stated Mayor Walter Sendzik.

The Mayor’s Poetry Challenge takes place during National Poetry Month in April, which began in 1998 by the League of Canadian Poets to celebrate and appreciate poetry. For more information visit www.stcatharines.ca/mayor.
