Message From the Port Colborne Fire Chief

Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services Chief Tom Cartwright and Fire Prevention Officer Scott Lawson and staff have been working hard to educate the community so the events like the tragedy in December 2016 never happen again.

Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services Chief Tom Cartwright shares this message with the community.

“The tragedy of December 2016 will never be forgotten. The loss of those four lives will ever impact the families involved, our community and all of the emergency responder community.

Since that tragedy, the City’s Fire Department has endeavoured to focus on making our community a safer place. The community has supported that effort through generous donations providing us with funds to promote fire safety.

The Fire Department has focused on ensuring community involvement through a Community-wide Fire Safety Program. We have worked with schools, community groups, media, businesses, City Departments, Region of Niagara Fire Services, as well as various community-minded organizations to spread the word.

Tragedies such as those of December 2016 can be prevented. It is our goal to make every effort to prevent this from ever happening again. Deaths through fire are not acceptable. Working smoke alarms and planning your escape will save your life.

As Fire Chief for the City, we simply “will not” accept this as a normal part of our lives. Your Fire Department will do everything possible to assist you in leading a fire safe life. We need you to help/work with us in preventing these tragedies.

The upcoming Holiday Season is always a dangerous time of year. We have a tendency to let our guard down. This time of year provides opportunities for the use of candles, extension cords, excessive cooking, combined with excessive celebrating. Always put fire safety first. Be mindful of what can happen to you and your family. Enjoy the Holiday Season while helping us keep our community safe.

Your City’s Fire Fighters and their families would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

Together we can make a difference in fire safety.
