The New to You Thrift Shop has moved to a new location, two doors down from its old location, offering customers a nicer shopping experience while they continue to help people out locally and globally.

The store has moved into its location at 59 Southworth St. in Welland, the former Welland Glass location.

“We were at the other location for 42 years,” store manager Margaret Manwaring said. “We were the second store in Ontario to open.”

The New to You Thrift Shop has the official name of Christian Benefit Shop and is an associate store under the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

The store receives gently used materials from donations, from clothing to appliances, children’s toys and more and sells the items to the community at reasonable prices while supporting MCC’s international aid efforts and the needs of local charities.

“We do give locally,” Manwaring said. “We also give to the MCC. Our store and our sister store in Port Colborne, The Port Colborne Thrift Shop, over the past 42 years, we’ve given over $1 million to the MCC.”

Locally both stores have helped recently with Syrian refugee families, the local food drives, Rose City Kids and more.

The Mennonite Central Committee is involved in over 60 countries around the world, participating in projects that help out communities in need.

According to Manwaring, the owner of Bosch had approached the board of directors for the store, asking if their building was up for sale which sparked the board to start looking for a new location.

“But, I’ll admit, I have been praying a lot longer than that that we would find something bigger and better,” she said.

The new store is spacious and bright, there is room for people to move about the new store, plenty of room between the aisles.

Roomier and brighter, manager Margaret Manwaring says old customers are very impressed with the new location.

“The customers are coming in and saying ‘Wow,’ it’s the first thing they say,” Manwaring said. “We really don’t have all that much more out on the floor but we have it spread out more so it is easier to shop. It’s great.”

They only needed a bit of an addition to the store.

“We added a small addition for our pre-sort area,” Manwaring said. “Now we have more room for more volunteers in the backroom to help process our donations.”

“That is what we need is more volunteers now,” she said.

Volunteers can reach them through the New to You Thrift Shop website: http://thrift.mcc.org/welland-new-to-you-shop/about-us or through their Facebook Page; https://www.facebook.com/NewtoYouThriftStore .

One of the major things the store now has parking.

“We now have a parking lot, out back, customers can access it off Afton Ave.,” Manwaring said. “That’s really great for our customers now.”

The New to You Thrift Shop’s Grand Opening at its location, 59 Soutworth St. is Saturday Nov. 5th starting at 10 a.m.

“We will be opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, we have celebrations, guest speakers coming in from MCC Kitchener, some of the bigwigs,” she said. “There will be 10% off purchases all day long, door prizes all day long.”

Manwaring invites all the old customers and new customers too to come out and see the new location.
