NRPS officer arrested for assault

NRP LogoOn Monday October 9, 2017, detectives from the 1 District St. Catharines Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) entered into an investigation after being contacted by a member of the public regarding an incident in the Town of Lincoln.

As a result of the investigation, on October 9, 2017, Niagara Regional Police Constable Ken Schonewille was arrested and he was charged with the alleged offence of:

  • Assault

The alleged assault occurred after an interaction with a 17-year-old male member of the public while the officer was on duty. The 17 year old victim sustained a minor injury.

Constable Schonewille was released on an Officer in Charge/Promise to Appear with a court date of November 21st, 2017 at 9:00AM at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.

Constable Schonewille has been a police officer with the NRPS for 15 years. At the time of the alleged offence he was assigned to uniform patrol.

In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, he has been suspended with pay pending further investigation.

As the matter is now before the courts, no further comment or details will be provided.
