Panthers win 5 – 1 over Junior Canadians

Welland’s Alexander Gonyou gets tangled up by Pelham’s Thomas Young in first period GOJHL hockey action Saturday night in Welland.

The Pelham Panthers came to Welland Saturday Oct. 28/2017, they took home a 5 – 1 win over the Junior Canadians in GOJHL hockey action.

The first period was a scoreless battle until Pelham’s Peter Izzo netted the lone goal of the period at 16:13 with assists going to Andrew Rennie and Anthony Gigliotti.

Pelham increased the lead to 4 – 0 with three unanswered goals in the second period. Francesco Gigliotti put one between the goal posts at 9:01, assisted by Thomas Young and Jared Hill. Anthony Gigliotti added another at 14:25 assisted by Adam Scholz and Jared Hill. Thomas Young netted a power play goal at 17:31 assisted by Mike Butterfield and Adam Scholz.

Welland’s Maliek Powell put them on the scoreboard at 2:22 in the third period, assists went to Liam Anderson and Matt Hobbs. Pelham’s Matt Ruigrok netted their fifth goal at 14:37 assisted by Anthony Gigliotti and Adam Scholz.

In hockey action Thursday Oct. 26 both Pelham and Welland lost their games. The Thorold Blackhawks won 5 – 2 over the Panthers, the Ancaster Avalanche a 6 – 5 win over Welland.

Both Welland and Pelham are in action again Sunday Oct. 29/2017, both teams are on home ice. Pelham faces St. Catharines at 3 p.m. Welland faces Niagara Falls at 7 p.m.
