Port Colborne Lions donate towards Ophthalmology Microscope

Members of the Port Colborne Lioins Club recently made a $10,000 donation to OneFoundation for Niagara Health to go towards an Ophthalmology Microscope.

On March 31, the Lions Club of Port Colborne generously donated $10,000 to OneFoundation for Niagara Health System as part of Lions’ Eye Care’s $200,000 commitment for the purchase of a new microscope for Ophthalmology at Niagara Health.

The new microscope contains advanced and accurate technology that helps Niagara Health’s team of ophthalmologists perform delicate ocular procedures on patients, including cataract, cornea and glaucoma surgeries — conditions that affect thousands of Niagara residents on a yearly basis.

“This donation from the Lions Club of Port Colborne helps ensure extraordinary eye care for our patients and ultimately supports the building of a healthier Niagara,” said Roger D. Ali, President and CEO of OneFoundation.

The Lions Club of Port Colborne passionately fundraised to support Lions’ Eye Care’s initiative, which supports a regional program where more than 5,600 eye surgeries are performed every year at Niagara Health’s Welland Site.

The Ophthalmology Microscope purchased with the help of the Port Colborne Lions Club.

Dr. Rhemtulla, Chief of Ophthalmology at Niagara Health, took the Lions on a tour of an Ophthalmology Operating Room. Dr. Rhemtulla also demonstrated how the new microscope, which arrived in October 2016, works and explained how their donation will positively impact eye care in Niagara for years to come.

Also in attendance for the cheque presentation was Doug Alexander, Past International Director from Lions International, Glenn Connell, President of Lions Eye Care, and Bradd Anderson from St. David and District Lions Club.
