Ready to ring in the New Year

Communities around the region are ready to ring in 2018. St. Catharines, Welland and Port Colborne are holding free events featuring fun and entertainment for the whole family.

In St. Catharines, families are invited to participate in fun family activities at the Meridian Centre (1 IceDogs Way) from noon until 2 p.m. Activities include free public skating, music by DJ Marinko, crafts, inflatable bouncers, face painting and more.

St. Catharines is also offering free leisure swimming at St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre (425 Carlton St.) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. DJ Tanner will be supplying the music at the centre.

On Monday Jan. 1/2018 there will be a traditional New Year’s Day Levee in St. Catharines.

“Toast 2018 on Monday, Jan. 1 with Mayor Walter Sendzik, city councillors and members of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and the 10th Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery,” a press release from the City of St. Catharines said. “All are welcome to attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Street Armoury (81 Lake St.). The toast takes place at 11:45 a.m. A firing of a cannon follows at noon.”

Port Colborne’s Annual New Year’s Eve Family Celebration at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre takes place form 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 31/2017.

“Lots of free family fun has been scheduled,” a press release from the City of Port Colborne said.

There’s swimming, skating, games, face painting, Mad Scientist show, and more including fireworks at 6 p.m., weather depending.

On Monday Jan. 1/2018 Port Colborne Mayor John Maloney and Council will be hosting the Mayor’s New Year’s Levee in Council Chambers from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall. All are invited, light refreshments will be served.

Welland’s 17th Annual Children’s New Year’s Eve Bash! 2018 begins Sunday Dec. 31/2017 at 4 p.m until 6 p.m.

The event is at the Welland Community Wellness Complex and the Welland Main Arena. Games, fun and entertainment will be at both locations including a Glow in the Dark family skate, games, cotton candy, dance party and more.

The event is capped off with fireworks along the canal at 5:50 p.m., weather permitting.
