Sacré-Coeur Church Building Raising Funds for Stairway to Heaven

sacrecouerSacré-Coeur has decided to hold a raffle/lottery draw with a limited 5,000 tickets printed at 10$ each and will be drawn of December 18, 2016. There will be $10,000 in cash to be won and the proceeds will go directly to the reasons stated below. In turn, the community will continue to benefit from a building offering its services for many generations to come.

For the past 97 years the community of Sacré-Coeur located at 72 Empire St in Welland has served and has been the focal point to so many from the past and present. Its contributions to the local area have been immeasurable and historical. Many well-known dignitaries have visited such as Prime minister Louis St-Laurent, Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Jacques Plante to name a few.

With its rich history well documented that witnessed the construction of 3 churches. The first demolished in 1932 to give way to the second which in turn was decommissioned in 1960 and eventually demolished in 2015. The third opened its doors in 1960 and presently serves for the gathering of over 1,500 faithful on a weekly basis.

In 2009, Ontario Heritage Trust commemorated a Historical Provincial Plaque recognizing the important role that this parish has and continues to contribute in Welland and its surroundings.

For those who’ve been raised locally, most will likely at one time or another recollect attending Sacré-Coeur’s hall for various activities such as banquet receptions, NA and AA programs, political functions, scouts functions, social dances along with many fundraisers for the local community and its surroundings. On Wednesday nights it welcomes youths that participate in activities put on by Special Olympics and for the past 20 years it’s been home to the Monday night Out of the Cold program at no cost to the community.

With the existing building dating more than five decades the need to repair and upgrade the structure to today’s standards is more prevalent than ever. For the past few years, many of these necessities have been completed such as the replacement of the boilers, a new roof, the installation of an elevator for the disable, a fire alarm system and kitchen upgrades to name a few all supported by churches patrons and the community.

Although most of the major repairs were addressed, the main entrance stairs remained a problem. The stairs are directly located above the main hall washrooms and after years of band aid repairs it became evident for safety reasons that they would require to be replaced at a cost of well over 192,000$. The new stairs were recently reconstructed and we are now face with the challenge of fundraising to pay off the debt.

This is why we’ve decided to hold a raffle/lottery draw with a limited 5,000 tickets printed at $10 each and which be drawn @11:30am on December 18, 2016 on these “stairs to heaven”. There will be $10,000 in cash to be won and the proceeds will go directly to cover the stair repairs. In turn, the community will continue to benefit from a church and hall offering its services for many generations to come.
