Significant snowfall expected for Friday

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Thursday Jan. 11/2018 calling for icy conditions late Friday with a significant snowfall expected for Friday night.

“A very strong cold front will cross Niagara Friday morning and Eastern Ontario Friday afternoon,” the statement said. “Rain will quickly transition to snow, with a risk of brief freezing rain during the changeover.”

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots could become icy and slippery. Extra care should be taken when walking or driving in affected areas,” it said.

“The snow will continue through Friday night into Saturday morning. Current indications suggest snowfall amounts in the 10 to 15 cm range by Saturday morning,” it said. “Considerable uncertainty remains as these regions will be on the northwest edge of a major winter storm.”
