Snow and cold on its way

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement on Saturday Feb. 3/2018 saying that snow and cold is on its way for South Niagara starting Saturday night.

“Snow tonight and Sunday followed by sharp drop in temperatures early Sunday evening,” the statement said. “Periods of snow will continue tonight and Sunday. Snowfall amounts will not be heavy, but total weekend amounts may reach 10 centimetres.”

The statement says: “In addition, a sharp Arctic cold front is forecast to sweep across the region early Sunday evening. A sudden drop in temperature from near the freezing mark may make snow-covered roads rather icy Sunday evening.”

Motorists are warned to allow extra time to get to their destinations on Sunday and to be aware of possible icy situations.

“The snow affecting Southern Ontario this weekend is courtesy of a low pressure system currently over Iowa,” the statement said. “It is forecast to track across Georgian Bay early Sunday and into southern Quebec by evening. Although it is a relatively weak system, it will absorb some moisture from the Great Lakes tonight and Sunday.”
