Sledge hockey exhibition game a favoured highlight

Port Colborne was the location for a lot of snow fun this weekend as the 19th Annual SportsFest Festival of Sports took over the city Saturday Feb. 10 through Sunday Feb. 11/2018.

“People are outside enjoying the activities in the snow and having fun,” Port Colborne Mayor John Maloney said Saturday. “It’s just great to see the community come together and enjoy the event.”

One of the highlights of this year’s SportsFest was a sledge hockey exhibition game Saturday between Team Canada and Team USA. Both teams will be competing shortly at the XII Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“The place is packed, a lot of fans have come to see the two teams in action,” Michelle Cuthbert, City of Port Colborne Corporate Communications Officer said.

Over 1,200 people filled the Vale Health and Wellness Centre to watch the game. Canada won 3 – 0 in Saturday’s game.

Other events around the city included the annual Mayor’s Cup Invitational Hockey Tournament, the 19th Annual Snow Golf Tournament, the Zuvich Memorial Sno-Pitch Tournament, a ball hockey tournament at market square and the annual volleyball tournament. The Vale Health and Wellness Centre also hosted activities for families, the Canalside hosted the Soup Cook Off and a music trivia night.

“It was amazing to see them outside Saturday at the Sno-Pitch Tournment,” Cuthbert said. “The snow was falling quite a bit, even blowing around, and everyone was laughing and having a great time.”

Cuthbert said that there were 16 teams in the Mayor’s Cup Invitational Hockey Tournament, 23 teams registered for the volleyball tournament, 10 teams participated in the sno-pitch tournament and 50 people participated in the snow golf tournament.

“The numbers are great,” she said. “All events are well attended.”
