Warming centres open in Port Colborne and Welland

With the freezing temperatures and cold winds Port Colborne and Welland have opened up warming centres where people can take refuge from the cold.

The City of Welland and Welland Public Library Branches are encouraging residents to exercise caution during extreme cold weather alerts,” a City of Welland press release said. “The city’s Cold Alert Program offers warming stations at the following city-owned facilities and Public Library Branches when temperatures drop below -15ºC.”

The following are a list of designated warming centres in Welland:

  • Welland Civic Square, located at 60 East Main Street, Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Sat 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sun 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Welland Community Wellness Complex, located at 145 Lincoln Street, Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sat 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sun 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Welland Public Library Main Branch, Located at 50 The Boardwalk, Mon-Thurs 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Fri 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sat 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sun 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Welland Public Library Diamond Trail Branch, located at 315 Southworth Street, Mon-Thurs 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fri Closed, Sat 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sun Closed.
  • Welland Public Library Seaway Mall Branch, located at 800 Niagara Street, Mon Closed, Tues-Fri 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sat 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sun Closed.

“With unseasonably cold temperatures affecting the Niagara Region a warming centre has opened in Port Colborne at the Guild Hall, thanks to St. James St. Brendan Anglican Church,” a press release from the City of Port Colborne said.  “The Guild Hall will remain open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Wednesday Jan.10/2018 to provide individuals a place to warm up.”

The Guild Hall is located beside City Hall at 72 Charlotte St. in Port Colborne.

“This is a place for those without shelter or adequate heat to come to a warm place for the day.  Coffee and tea will be offered,” the release said.

Volunteers needed in Port Colborne

They are also looking for volunteers to help at the Guild Hall during this time.

“We are looking for some volunteers to cover 3-hour shifts through to at least Sunday,” the release said. “If you have 3 hours to spare, please give Nancy a call at 905-835-2900 Ext 301 or email nancygiles@portcolborne.ca.”
