Welland Canal closes Monday

As the Welland Canal prepares to shutdown Monday night, numerous vessels have been headed unbound and downbound through the system and Port Colborne over the past several days.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. said the canal will shut down at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

It added that any transits of the canal after that time will be permitted, subject to prior written agreement, and added irrespective of operating conditions, all vessels must be clear of the
canal by noon on New Years Eve.

Rumoured to be one of the last vessels expected through the canal is the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon, a frequent visitor to Port Colborne in the winter months.

It’s unknown how many, if any, vessels will be docked in the city throughout the closure of the canal for the season.
