Whalers take first playoff round against Aces

Daniel Pugliese of the Niagara Whalers and Alec Segers of the Windors Aces collide in GMHL playoff hockey action Sunday night in Port Colborne.

The Niagara Whalers have taken the first round of the playoffs heading to the Russell Cup as they finished off the Windor Aces in game two 6 – 3 Sunday Feb. 25/2018 in Port Colborne.

Round one in the 2018 GMHL Russell Cup Playoffs is the best of three games.

In game one Saturday night, the Whalers won 5 – 4. The Whaler goals came from Patrick Desjardins, Ethan Spaxman, Daniel Pugliese and Frolov Mikhail for two.

The first period ended with the Whalers ahead 3 – 2. In the second period, the Aces scored the lone goal bringing the game to a 3 – 3 tie.

Niagara added two more to Windor’s one to take the game 5 – 4.

In Sunday’s action, the Aces were the first on the scoreboard in the first period. Kristers Bormanis netted their first goal at 3:36 assisted by James Brooks and Viacheslav Chegrintcev. Cle Phibbs netted their second at 4:19 assisted by Mark Gangnon and Raman Isaikou.

Zach Main put the Whalers on the scoreboard at 4:57 assisted by Steven Farano and Jake Lloyd. Jake Lloyd tied it up on the power play at 17:03, assists went to Zach Main and Patrick Desjardins.

The Whalers pulled ahead in the second period with a goal from Jake Lloyd at 11:58, assisted by Jakob Reeves and Alex Remedios.

The Whalers were now leading 3 – 2 going into the third.

Frolov Mikhail cushioned the Whaler lead at 5:54, assisted by Kellan Rosenbaum and Elias Berglund.

Mark Gangnon of the Aces added his second goal of the night at 6:19, closing the gap to one, assists went to Cale Phibbs and Thomas Virban.

Alex Remedios widened the gap for the Whalers late in the third at 17:52 assisted by Nick Patorious and Jake Lloyd. Zach Main’s power play goal at 19:23 assisted by Ethan Spaxman capped off the Whaler scoring, the season now ended for the Windsor Aces as the Niagara Whalers move on to the next level of playoff action.
