Whalers take second game of Russell Cup Championship series

The Niagara Whalers have taken game two in the best-of-seven GMHL Russell Cup Championship series, winning 5 – 0 over the North Division Champs the Parry Sound Islanders. The Niagara Whalers now lead the series 2 – 0.

The action was back and forth in the first period but no were goals scored by either team.

The Whalers scored three unanswered goals in the second period, giving them a 3 – 0 lead.

Zack Lansfield led off the Whaler scoring with a goal on the power play at 4:41, assisted by Matt Hore and Manny Manns. Tyler Jackson netted the second one on a breakaway at 12:16 assisted by Zack Lansfield and Paolo Sivilotti. Paolo Sivilotti netted their third goal on the power play at 19:44 assisted by Zack Lansfield and Brandon Cercone.

The Whalers scored two more unanswered goals in the third period making it 5 – 0.

Blake Luscombe netted his second goal of the night at 4:11, assists went to Matt Hore and Callahan Moretti. Blake Luscombe scored his hat trick goal at 13:37, assists went Matt Hore and Manny Manns.

The games three stars came from the Niagara Whalers:

  • Star #1: Blake Luscombe with three goals.
  • Star #2: goalie Joel Horodziejcyk earning the shut out after 24 saves.
  • Star #3: Matt Hore with three assists.

Game three of the Russell Cup Championship series is scheduled for Saturday March 25 in Parry Sound, game four Sunday March 25 at 7 p.m. in Port Colborne and game five on Tuesday March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne.
