Whalers trump Aces with 10 – 7 win

Niagara Whalers logoThe Niagara Whalers drew a better hand Sunday Jan. 21/2018 in GMHL hockey action in Port Colborne as they won 10 – 7 over the visiting Windsor Aces.

Windsor was actually first on the scoreboard with a goal from Viacheslav Chegintcev at 4:46 in the first period, assisted by Brett Mennear.

Less than a minute later at 5:21, Niagara’s Ethan Spaxman put them on the scoreboard assisted by Patrick Desjardins. Jake Lloyd put Niagara ahead twelve seconds later, assisted by Zach Main and then Ethan Spaxman netted his second goal on the power play at 7:28 assisted by Patrick Desjardins and Steven Farano.

Windor’s Raman Iaikou connected for their second goal at 8:41 assisted by Kristers Bormanis.

David Christopher netted a power play goal for Niagara at 10:42, assisted by Johan Swiatek and Frolov Mikhail giving them a 4 – 2 lead.

Kristers Bormanis narrowed the gap a little with Windor’s third goal at 17:23 assisted by Viacheslav Chegrintcev and Raman Isaikou.

Frolove Mikhail widened the gap for Niagara at 18:56 assisted by Jake Lloyd and Sam Martin, the first period ending with a 5 – 3 score for the Whalers.

In the second period, Jake Lloyd added his second goal of the night on the power play at 7:20, assists went to Zach Main and Ethan Spaxman. Frolov Mikhail connected for his second of the night at 8:19 assisted by Sam Martin and David Christopher.

Windsor came back with two quick goals, one at 9:39 from Patrick Cuffaro assisted by Alec Segers and Bjorn Wilts. The other came at 10:00 from Viacheslav Chegrintcev, his second of the night, assists went to Alec Segers and Raman Isaikou.

Steven Farano scored Niagara’s last goal of the period at 14:34 assisted by Jake Lloyd and David Christopher giving the Whalers an 8 – 5 lead for the end of the second.

In the third period, the Aces netted the first two goals. Brett Mennear connected at 9:15 assisted by Kristers Bormanis. Alec Segers netted their seventh goal at 11:37 assisted by James Brooks and Viacheslav Chegrintcev.

Frolov Mikhail connected for his hat trick for the Whalers at 12:14 assisted by Mitchell Chastelet and Steven Farano netted his second goal of the night at 18:05 assisted by Zach Main and Jake Lloyd putting the Whalers total to ten.

The three stars of the game are from the Niagara Whalers:

  • Star #1: Jake Lloyd with two goals and three assists.
  • Star #2: Frolov Mikhail with three goals and one assist.
  • Star #3: Ethan Spaxman with two goals and one assist.

The Niagara Whalers will be away for a couple of weeks, they’ll face the Windsor Aces Saturday Jan. 27/2018 in Windsor, then the St. George Ravens in St. George Sunday Jan. 28/2018. They return home Friday Feb. 2/2018 to face the Kingsville Kings at 7:30 p.m. at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre.
