Whalers win Friday night scoreboard fight against Ravens

Niagara Whalers logoThe Niagara Whalers had a fight on their hands Friday Nov. 10/2017 as the second place St. George Ravens came to Port Colborne. In the end, it was the Whalers who were victorious after three periods of tough hockey with an 8 – 7 win.

The scoring started early in the first period with Steven Farano knocking in the first Whaler goal at 0:48 assisted by Will Harvey. The Ravens evened the score at 4:26 with a goal from Adam Kawalec assisted by Luke Gazzola and Brayden Lane.

Niagara scored the next two to take a 3 – 1 lead. Brandon Lindberg connected at 4:55 assisted by Zach Main and Steven Farano. David Christopher added a goal at 9:08 assisted by Jakob Reeves and Nick Pastorious.

St. George added two more to end the period in a 3 – 3 tie. Luke Gazzola connected at 14:24 assisted by Lucas Pozzobon and Adam Kawalec. Chris Haigh added the third St. George goal at 16:33 assisted by Luke Gazzola and Adam Kawalec.

The St. George Ravens went ahead 5 – 4 in the second period, they outscored the Whalers 2 – 1. The first Ravens goal came at 0:55 in the period on the power play from Chris Haigh with assists going to Adam Kawalec and Guy Polillo. Lucas Pozzobon added their fifth at 12:01 with Stephen Alvo assisting.

Niagara’s second period goal came at 14:39, a short-handed goal from Brandon Lindberg assisted by Zach Main and Jesse Masterson.

Niagara trailed behind St. George until well past the halfway mark of the third period. Jake Lloyd tied the game for Niagara with his goal at 13:03 assisted by Jakob Reeves. David Christopher tied the game at five each at 13:37 assisted by Jakob Reeves and Jake Lloyd. Jakob Reeves put Niagara ahead 7 – 5 at 15:17 assisted by David Christopher and Daniel Pugliese.

St. George’s goal at 18:34 from Luke Gazzola assisted by Joshua Gill and Adam Kawalec put the game within reach, trailing the Whalers by one, they pulled their goalie.

At 18:52, Zach Main scored on the empty net to put the game at 8 – 6 for the Whalers. St. George’s Stephen Alvo added another for them to bring their total to seven at 19:26 assisted by Brayden Lane and Chris Haigh.

The Whalers held on to finish the game with the win in regular time.

The games three stars are:

  • Star #1: Jakob Reeves, Niagara Whalers with one goal and three assists.
  • Star #2: Adam Kawalec, St. George Ravens with one goal and four assists.
  • Star #3: Will Harvey, goaltender for the Niagara Whalers with 48 saves for a 0.873 sv%.

The Niagara Whalers will be doing back-to-back battles in North York Saturday Nov. 11 against the North York Renegades and Sunday Nov. 12 against the Toronto Predators. They will then be facing the Bradford Bulls in Bradford on Wednesday Nov. 15 then returning to Port Colborne Friday Nov. 17/2017 to face off against the Windsor Aces.
