Whalers win OT battle at scoreboard against Ravens

The Niagara Whalers battled to an overtime win with the second place St. George Ravens in Sunday night GMHL hockey action in Port Colborne Oct. 22/2017.

The battle at the scoreboard ended with the Whalers adding a 10 – 9 win to their season.

The Whalers finished the first period leading 3 – 1 though the Ravens were first on the scoreboard. Adam Kawalec netted a power play goal for the Ravens at 1:12 assisted by Chris Haigh and Luke Gazzola. Niagara’s Brandon Lindberg scored their first goal at 7:59 assisted by Zach Main and David Christopher. Zach Main connected shortly after at 8:43 with help from David Christopher. Steven Farano netted the third goal on the power play at 11: 27 assisted by Patrick Desjardins and Brandon Lindberg.

The Whalers outscored the Ravens 5 – 4 in the second period, again the Ravens started the scoring. Chris Haigh connected at 1:12 with an assist from Joshua Gill. Steven Farano scored his second of the night for the Whalers at 8:40 assisted by Zach Main.

The next two goals came from St. George. Tysen Willemsen netted a goal at 9:35 assisted by Adam Kawalec and Marko Ondov. Chris Haigh scored his second of the game at 10:38 with an assist going to Richard Heindl.

Zach Main of the Whalers scored his second of the game shortly after at 10:46 assisted by Steven Farano and Brandon Lindberg.

Lucas Pozzobon connected for the Ravens at 15:07 assisted by Chris Haigh.

The next three goals came from the Whalers giving them an 8 – 5 lead at the end of the second.

David Christopher knocked one between the pipes at 16:48 assisted by Nick Pastorious. Nick Pastorious then connected at 18:08 with assists going to Jesse Masterson and David Christopher. Steven Farano scored his hat trick goal on the power play at 19:27 assisted by Brandon Lindberg and Zach Main.

The St. George Ravens came back in the third period scoring four goals taking the lead at one point.

Lucas Pozzobon connected at 8:14 assisted by Marko Ondov. Luke Gazzola nailed a power play goal at 10:30 assisted by Chris Haigh and Adam Kawalec. Adam Kawalec connected ten seconds later assisted by Alessio Piroso and Guy Polillo. With Adam Kawalec’s hat trick goal at 17:57 assisted by Marko Ondov and Chris Haigh the Ravens took a 9 – 8 lead until David Christopher connected for the Whalers at 19:11, assisted by Zach Main and Steven Farano tying the game at nine each and sending it into overtime.

About three quarters of the way through the first overtime period, David Christopher scored his hat trick goal, assisted by Nick Pastorious, ending the game in a 9 – 8 win for the Whalers.

The games three stars from the Niagara Whalers are:

  • Star #1: David Christopher with three goals and three assists.
  • Star #2: Zach Main with two goals and four assists.
  • Star #3: Steven Farano with three goals and two assists.

The Whalers are away for a bit, they face the Hurricanes in Tilsonburg on Friday Oct. 27/2017, then the St. George Ravens on Sunday Oct. 29/2017 in St. George. They will be on home ice again on Friday November 3/2017 when they face the Northumberland Stars.
