Agreement opens new doors for international business students

Niagara College and Excelsior Community College (ECC) in Kingston, Jamaica have inked an agreement that will provide a pathway for students in Excelsior’s business programs to advance their studies at Niagara College.

Under the agreement, students who complete Excelsior’s Associate Degree programs in Business Studies, Supply Chain Management, Humanitarian and Emergency Management or Coastal and Marine Tourism Logistics, will be granted direct entry into the third year of Niagara College’s International Commerce and Global Development Ontario College Bachelor Degree program.

The partnership will provide Jamaican business students with a clear pathway to gain international business and educational experiences in Canada. Students in NC’s International Commerce and Global Development program study in one of the world’s busiest international frontiers with opportunities to participate in co-op, study exchanges and summer school abroad as well as applied research projects.

“We’re very excited to partner with Excelsior Community College to offer students this unique educational pathway,” said Vivian Kinnaird, Niagara College’s dean of Business, Hospitality and Environmental Studies. “Excelsior’s high-calibre business programs are producing knowledgeable grads who are ready to take their education to the next level. Furthering their development through the International Commerce and Global Development program is a perfect way for these students to add NC’s unique experiential learning experience to their resume.”

Through the program, students will be able to graduate with an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Niagara College in approximately two years or four semesters.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with Excelsior’s commitment to transforming lives and nurturing global citizens,” stated Dr. Zaria Malcolm, vice principal of Academic Affairs and Institutional Advancement at ECC. “Through our Caricom Education for Employment partnership, we sought to develop curriculum that would allow graduates to articulate seamlessly to further studies at Niagara College. This articulation agreement will ensure that we offer our students global certification that exposes them to real-world, practical learning experiences that will give them a competitive advantage in today’s marketplace.”

Niagara College and Excelsior Community College have a well-established and mutually beneficial relationship, having just concluded a three-year joint project in which NC supported the development of a Logistics Management program at Excelsior.

This collaboration will be done through the School of Business and Entrepreneurial Studies at Excelsior Community College. Established in 1974, Excelsior Community College (ECC) is the first of eight community colleges in Jamaica and is considered the premiere community college in the English-speaking Caribbean. ECC currently offers a range of programmes and courses including Post Graduate Diplomas, Bachelor’s Degrees, Associate Degrees, Professional Diplomas and Certificates.

NC’s International Commerce and Global Development program is a four-year Ontario College Bachelor’s Degree program that prepares students for a successful career as an international commerce practitioner or trans-national manager in the public or private sector; or as a manager, project officer or development officer in international development.
