Animals perish in Wainfleet barn fire

One person was sent to hospital for smoke inhalation and several animals perished in a small barn fire in Wainfleet Friday morning, March 1/2019.

Firefighters were on the scene of the fire on Hewitt Rd. until the early afternoon.

“Several animals were in the barn at the time of the fire,” a press release from Wainfleet Fire and Emergeny Services said. “Approximately six animals were rescued, approximately another six animals succumbed to the fire.”

“The investigation into the origin and cause has determined that an Electrical appliance, possibly a Heat Lamp, ignited fine fuels, shavings and straw, near the floor of the barn, and is not considered suspicisous,” the release said.

“The fire was contained to the small barn, which was a total loss,” the release says. “The Fire Department estimates the property damage & loss to be approximately $85,000.00.”
