Arrest made in Welland arson investigation

The Niagara Regional Police made an arrest on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, after an investigation into a residential fire that took place in Welland on October 9, 2020, in the area of Duncan Street and Cozy Street.

“As a result of the investigation, on November 16, 2020, the suspect was arrested with the assistance from the k9 unit, the Emergency Task Unit, detectives with Street Crime 3 District (Welland), and the Marine Unit with the Niagara Regional Police Service,” a Niagara Regional Police Service press release said.

Ronald M. Smith (34 years old) of Katrine, Ontario, was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  • Fail to comply with release order (2 counts)

Smith was held in custody pending a Nov. 17 bail hearing. Anyone with any information regarding the case is asked to contact the NRPS at 905-688-4111, ext 3300.
