Central Station Education Initiative receives National Trust grant

The Central Station Education Initiative (CSEI) is moving forward with its plans for the former Central Fire Hall in Welland.

“The Central Station Education Initiative (CSEI) has been selected to receive a Spring 2018 Launch Pad Coaching Grant from the National Trust for Canada,” a CSEI press release said Thursday May. 3/2018.

“This is the second grant CSEI has received in the last month,” the release said. “The organization was also selected by Niagara Regional Council in April to receive a Niagara Investment in Culture grant.”

The not-for-profit organization mandate is to preserve and educate about the material and cultural history of Niagara Region’s fire services, police service, paramedic service and other emergency services in the region.

Central Fire Station is a designated heritage building constructed in 1920. Last October, Welland City Council voted to lease the building to the Central Station Education Initiative. The initiative is fundraising to restore the station, transforming it into a financially self-sustaining multi-use facility. The plans include a portion which will be open to the public displaying the history of firefighters as they lived and worked.

Saturday May 5/2018, CSEI members will be at the City of Welland Market showcasing their plans for the transformation of the landmark building.
