Charges issued following altercation at Sunset Beach in St. Catharines

NRP LogoNiagara Regional Police Service press release – On Sunday, June 28/2020, at approximately 9:00 p.m. 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers were called to Sunset Beach in St. Catharines, in regards to a disturbance call.

Initial investigation revealed that 5 people were sprayed with bear mace and 3 people were assaulted, as a result of an altercation. During the altercation, a male had brandished a knife, as well.

All victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were assessed by EMS, on the scene.  A female victim was transported a local hospital for further treatment.

Mackenzie Benard (22 years old) of St. Catharines, was arrested and charged with the alleged offences of:

  • Assault, contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada (4 Counts)
  • Administer Noxious Substance, contrary to Section 245(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Assault with a Weapon, contrary to Section Section 267 (a) (2 Counts)
  • Utter Threats to Cause Bodily Harm, contrary to Section 264 (1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada

Benard was released from custody with a future court date of September 1/2020.

Sasha Smith (23 years old) of St. Catharines, was arrested and charged with the alleged offence of:

  • Assault, contrary to Section 266, of the Criminal Code of Canada

Smith was released from custody with a future court date of September 1/2020.
