Choir presents a festival of Christmas Choral Treasures

Choralis Camerata press release – Choralis Camerata is giving Bach to music lovers across Niagara Dec. 1 and 2/2018, as the 50-person chamber presents A Festival of Christmas Choral Treasures, featuring highlights from Johann Sebastien Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Written for the Christmas season of 1734, the work is one of Bach’s most complex, emotional masterpieces, and tells the traditional Nativity story through a series of six cantatas. In the first half of its performance, the choir will bring to life the entire first cantata and highlights from the remainder of this majestic work, leaving audiences with a sense of joy and peace to start their holiday season.

The second half of the performance will feature an assortment of other holiday staples, including O Holy Night, This Holy Christmas Night, and John Rutter’s What Sweeter Music, following which the audience will join the choir in such classics as O Come, All Ye Faithful and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.

True to its motto of “Singing Across Niagara,” Choralis Camerata is offering two performances of the work. Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Catharines (53 Church St.) will play host to the first performance on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. That will be followed up with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Dec. 2 at Central United Church in Welland (12 Young St.).

Choralis’ artistic director David Braun will conduct the choir in A Festival of Christmas Choral Treasures, which will also feature noted soloists Kira Braun, Melissa-Marie Shriner, Jennifer McKillop, William Sadler and Michael York. The choir will be accompanied by Lynne Honsberger.

“The choir is thrilled to usher in the holiday season for our audience with these classic choral works,” said Braun. “Our journey into Bach’s Christmas Oratorio will reveal the singular genius of this great composer, and our selection of Christmas classics you know and love will combine to create a choral experience like none other.”

Tickets are $28 per person ($25 for seniors and $12 for students) and are available online at choraliscamerata.com, by calling 905-646-9225, by speaking with members of the choir, or at the door.
