Education Foundation of Niagara press release – Students at the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) Academy are getting a very special graduation gift from the RBC Foundation of $25,000 towards technology needed when attending college and university.

Opened in 2011, the DSBN Academy is a Grade 6 – 12 school that supports students from all 12 Niagara municipalities to become the first in their family to graduate from college or university.

“The Class of 2019 is an impressive group of young men and women who know they have a bright future ahead of them,” says Lisa Nazar, Secondary Principal, DSBN Academy. “This generous gift from the RBC Foundation will support a smoother transition to the next stage of their learning without students having to worry about some of the financial pressures associated with college or university.”

Expenses include postsecondary application fees ranging from $95 to $155 and computer costs averaging $800 per student.

“At RBC we recognize the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders,” says David Murphy, Wealth Advisor for RBC Dominion Securities. “We hope that this donation will help students approach this next phase of their development with a sense of pride in what they have already achieved and optimism about the future.”

With a mission to provide young people with needed funds and resources where government funds are not available, the Education Foundation of Niagara currently oversees various donor-funded programs for DSBN Academy.

The Foundation’s Executive Director, Laura Byers says the Academy, the first school of its kind in Ontario, is a “forward-thinking initiative that provides a unique range of supports to students who have committed themselves to completing a postsecondary degree or diploma.”

“The RBC Foundation has demonstrated true leadership with this gift,” Byers said. “They are role models for other financial institutions and donors who also understand that investing in young people supports the success of students and the future prosperity of Niagara.”

“We are incredibly grateful for their continued support,” she said.
