EC calls for potential snowfall Thursday/Friday

Don’t put away the snow tires yet, Environmental Canada issued a special weather statement for South Niagara on Wednesday Feb. 28/2018 saying that there is potential for heavy snowfall late for Thursday into Friday morning.

“Rain is expected to develop Thursday as a strong low pressure system approaches the area,” the statement said.  “The rain will likely change to snow late in the day as colder air moves into the region.”

“There is still considerable uncertainty regarding the exact evolution of this weather system, but there is a potential for snowfall amounts in excess of 15 cm late Thursday into Friday morning for portions of Southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe,” the statement said.

It also said that gusty northeast winds up to 60 km/h can increase the risk of blowing snow and poor visibility in certain areas and warns motorists to exercise caution.

Conditions are expected to improve Friday morning when the system moves away from the area.
