Events focus on climate change

The Gathering Place in Port Colborne is presenting a series of events that examines climate change and how members of the faith community can help in response to climate change.

The series will look at how climate change will impact Port Colborne landscapes and how can the faith community respond constructively.
The first event takes place on Thursday, May 9/2019, with a review of David Wallace-Wells book called “The Uninhabitable Earth.”

“Together with the second session on Thursday, May 23/2019, we will explore how climate warming may affect Port Colborne. From this examination, we will reflect upon what a faith community can do to assist our members, our families and our community respond,” a press release from The Gathering Place said.

The third presentation is an exhibition featuring a panel display showing future changes to the St. Lawrence Great Lakes Watershed produced by a U.S. based consulting firm.

“The display is based on work undertaken to produce a video you can find at https://www.som.com/projects/great_lakes_century_vision_plan,” the release says. “Together with the video, this display will be coordinated with other community events (e.g., Canal days and the Art Crawl) scheduled for the summer of 2019.”

“The fourth event, to be scheduled will examine how meditation, silence, and prayer might be applied in response to the challenges and opportunities these session present,” the release said.

The sessions will be facilitated by George McKibbon, a Registered Professional Planner in in Ontario and a Member of the American Institute of Certified Planners with specialty certification in environmental planning. He serves as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, University of Guelph, and lectures in land use planning at the W. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology, McMaster University.

The event is open to the public and free of charge however to plan for refreshments and seating anyone planning to attend is asked to RSVP by emailing office@thegp.ca or calling 905 834 4288.
