City of St. Catharines press release – Dig deeper into your family history and learn how to care for your own family collections at an in-depth workshop hosted by the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

The museum is hosting a two-day Family History Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 8/2020 and Saturday, Feb. 22/2020, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trained museum staff will offer specific resources, tools, and knowledge that you can utilize to organize, preserve, and share your personal family history for future generations.

“We’re excited to team up with the Mayholme Genealogical and Historical Research Centre to lead a tutorial on genealogical research,” said Kathleen Powell, supervisor of historical services and acting supervisor of cultural services. “We’re looking forward to an engaging, hands-on workshop that will allow residents to preserve their own family story and history.”

Topics covered will include photograph care and storage, family record care and storage (newspaper clippings, letters and other papers), family heirloom care and storage, conducting research, conducting and recording oral histories and written histories, and more. Participants will be asked to bring a box of family records or photographs to work with during the workshop.

The fee for the two-day workshop is $50 a person and pre-registration is required. Included in the fee is a workbook and other take-home resources. Light refreshments will also be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a lunch or snack for the day.
