A major fire has consumed a church in Welland Sunday, Feb. 24/2019, leaving the parishioners of the Be in Christ Church on Lincoln St. without a place to worship.

The fire caused about $750,000 damage according to Welland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Chief Adam Eckhart.

“The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office assisted the Welland Fire and Emergency fire prevention staff with the investigation,” Ekhart said.

The cause of the fire was listed as accidental, no further details were released at this time.

The firefighters were on scene at about 7 p.m. Sunday evening and cleared the scene very early Monday morning.

Eckhart said that the heavy winds, blowing snow and the cold temperature presented several challenges for the firefighters involved in battling the blaze.

In total, over 50 volunteer and full time Welland firefighters were engaged in extinguishing the fire as well as mutual aid from Pelham.
