Fire service offering smoke alarm recycling program

Smoke alarms do not last forever, says Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services.

That’s why it’s offering a smoke alarm recycling program.

The fire service says smoke alarms need to be replaced every seven to 10 years.

“Do not take your smoke alarms down, contact administration at 905-834-4512 (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and our firefighters will install a new smoke alarm for you. When you recycle your old smoke alarms the replacement smoke alarms will cost you $5 each and we will recycle your old smoke alarms complete with batteries,” the fire service says in a release.

For battery operated smoke alarms, change the battery every six months, and it’s recommended to change them when the clocks move forward and backward.

“Remember, never borrow the smoke alarm’s batter for another use.”
