Technology shapes many aspects of our lives, and as it continues to advance, children must learn digital literacy skills to succeed in life.

“In our digital world, kids need to be able to understand what content is reliable, how to find trusted information and how to interpret the endless content they can access,” explains Steve Brown, CEO of Nelson Education. “Fortunately, new tools in and out of the classroom can help.”

Here are some tips for parents to help their kids develop the digital skills they need to thrive today:

  1. Support the shift to digital learning. Recent generations will never know a world where the internet didn’t exist. By encouraging frequent exploration and use of digital platforms, parents maximize learning opportunities for their children in ways that are applicable to real-world settings.
  2. Emphasize the importance of trusted resources. While online resources can provide an infinite amount of information, it’s important that children understand the difference between trustworthy and untrustworthy sources. With new digital learning platforms, children can access and identify content that is safe and relevant to their learning objectives.
  3. Access to digital devices. Some families don’t have the means to afford computers or tablets at home. Now, however, opportunities to come into contact with technology are all around us in our daily life. Encourage children to take full advantage of this, especially in the classroom where new technologies and digital learning platforms are becoming available to all.
  4. Encourage safe self-exploration. By providing students with constant access to an in-depth catalogue of trusted content tied to curriculum, digital learning platforms help children learn and explore topics that most interest them, strengthening their tech-savviness while doing something they love.
