Freezing rain expected for weekend

It could be an icy weekend in Niagara, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Thursday Apr. 12/2018 calling for freezing rain and heavy rain starting Saturday.

“Rain ahead of a slow moving system is expected to change to freezing rain in Saturday afternoon,” the statement said. “Periods of freezing rain will continue into Sunday morning before changing to rain heavy at times.”

Some places around Niagara may see large amounts of freezing rain coupled with power outages according to the statement.

“Some places could see significant amounts of freezing rain,” the statement said. “The freezing rain combined with gusty northeast winds may result in power outages.”

“Untreated roads may be icy from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning,” it said.

The statement also says that flooding may become a threat in some areas Sunday. It also says that the rain is expected to taper off Monday.

“There remains uncertainty in the exact track of the low and resulting weather conditions,” the statement says. “Environment Canada will continue to monitor this situation as it evolves.”
