Gillian’s Place invites men to take a stand against domestic abuse

Gillian’s Place press release – On Saturday, Oct. 19/2019, Gillian’s Place invites men and boys to The Pen Centre to take part in the 14th annual Walk a Mile in HER Shoes® fundraiser.

Walkers are encouraged to wear traditionally female footwear in a show of support for women who have experienced abuse. Nearly $1,000,000 has been raised in 13 years.

This year Gillian’s Place has a fundraising goal of $130,000 for the event.

While most people know that abuse is unacceptable, it can be difficult to know how to help. Walk a Mile in HER Shoes® is the perfect opportunity to take a stand, while also raising awareness and funds for Gillian’s Place, the only emergency shelter for abused women and children serving North and West Niagara.

Walk a Mile in HER Shoes© is a critically important fundraiser for Gillian’s Place, as the organization must raise $500,000 each year to keep up with the demand for service.

“Every year we are faced with an increased demand for our services,” said Nicole Regehr, Director of Development & Violence Prevention Programs for Gillian’s Place. “The number of women reaching out to our crisis line went up from 2275 calls in 2017-18 to 3310 Crisis calls in 2018-19. This and other factors indicate that the occurrences of domestic violence are not decreasing, and Gillian’s Place serves a vital function in the Niagara community. Domestic violence is not a ‘woman’s issue’ and will take support from the men in our community to end violence against women.”

Walkers can register online at www.walkamileinhershoes.ca, or in-person on October 19th. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. and is taking place in the Event Court of the Pen Centre. Participants will enjoy Starbucks coffee, breakfast provided by Zehrs Market, family-friendly entertainment and more. Footwear is provided by Gillian’s Place. Friends and family are encouraged to join.
