An uprising requires three things: wine, theatre and ritual madness. Twitches & Itches Theatre’s (T & I) new show, The Bacchae, brings all of these elements together in an epic glam-rock, film-noir production at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in St. Catharines on Thursday Jan. 19th at 8:00 p.m.
T & I’s film-noir, glam-rock production The Bacchae, based on Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy of the same name, shows the rebellion of Dionysus, god of wine and ritual madness, against King Pentheus in this age-old tale about the clash between extreme left and right-wing politics.
“Our adaptation process began over 2 years ago,” says Colin Bruce Anthes, T & I’s Artistic Director. “We were interested in this story of a divided society on the verge of tearing itself apart. We had no idea a Donald Trump and a Brexit were around the corner.”
Founded in 2009 by Colin Bruce Anthes and Tom DiMartino, Twitches & Itches Theatre is a St. Catharines-based, emerging artist ensemble that creates original works of theatre through processes of collaboration.
Eight of the ensemble’s 9 members trained locally in St. Catharines at Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School and maintain a commitment to practice long-term in the community. In the last five years, the company’s work has garnered critical acclaim, sold-out houses and ten arts council grants.
Twitches & Itches Theatre also happens to be the largest employer of new generation theatre artists in Niagara. The Bacchae marks a milestone achievement for the ensemble.
