Junior Canadians earn OT win over Meteors

The Welland Junior Canadians earned a tough 4 – 3 win over the visiting Fort Erie Meteors Sunday Dec. 17/2017 in GOJHL hockey action in Welland.

The game started well for the Junior Canadians who had a strong 3 – 1 lead at the end of the first period.

Noah Bollert led off Welland’s scoring at 13:05 assisted by Alexander Gonyou and Charles Grimard. Drew Passero evened it up for Fort Erie with a short-handed goal at 15:01 assisted by Marco Lariccia and Luca Mazzo.

Welland pulled ahead with Brendan Rylott’s power play goal at 16:56 assisted by Roberto Moretto and Josh Chiarot. Nick Caputo netted their third on the power play at 18:24 assisted by Alexander Dameski and Noah Blakely.

The second period was scoreless.

A two goal early third period effort by Fort Erie’s Luca Mazzo brought the game to a tie which lasted throughout the third period and forcing the game into overtime. Mazzo’s first goal was unassisted at 2:58, his second at 3:19 assisted by Aidan McLeod.

Alexander Dameski won the game for the Junior Canadians with his goal at 1:38 in the overtime period, assists went to Noah Bollert and Roberto Moretto.

The three stars of the game were: Alexander Demski and Noah Bollert of the Welland Junior Canadians and Luca Mazzo of the Fort Erie Meteors.

The Welland Junior Canadians currently hold the sixth place position in the Golden Horseshoe Division, the Fort Erie Meteors the eighth place spot. For up-to-date stats see the GOJHL website: http://pointstreaksites.com/view/gojhl .

Welland will be on the ice the last time this year Friday Dec. 22/2017 in Niagara Falls facing the Canucks. In the first weekend of the New Year they will be doing back-to-back games against the Ancaster Avalanche, first Saturday Jan. 6/2018 in Ancaster, then Sunday Jan. 7/2018 in Welland at 7 p.m.

The Fort Erie Meteors are in St. Catharines to face the Falcons on Friday Dec. 22/2017, then at home against the Pelham Panthers at 7:15 p.m. Saturday Dec. 23/2017.
