Junior Canadians win Family Day matchup over Panthers

The Welland Junior Canadians won 3 – 1 in a Family Day matchup with the Pelham Panthers in GOJHL hockey action Monday Feb. 19/2018 in Pelham.

The first period was a scoreless battle between the two teams as heavy action went between both ends.

In the second period, the battle continued to a 1 -1 tie at the end of the period. The first goal came from Welland’s Matt Hobbs at 12:29 assisted by Brendan Rylott and Matthew Giannini. Connor Brown netted Pelham’s goal at 17:54 assisted by Zach Thompson and Noah Caperchione.

Welland went ahead at 6:46 in the third period with a short-handed goal from Noah Blakely assisted by Philip Liakakos and Matthew Giannini. The third Junior Canadians goal came from Maliek Powell, unassisted, at 17:07.

Welland outshot Pelham 48 to 39, Welland goalie Charles Grimard earned the first star of the game stopping 38 shots. The second star of the game was Noah Blakely from Welland and the third star went to Connor Brown of Pelham.

Next weekend will be the final weekend of the regular season, the Pelham Panthers will be facing the first place Caledonia Corvairs in both games next weekend, Saturday Feb. 24/2018 in Caledonia, Sunday Feb. 25/2018 in Pelham at 7:00 p.m.

The Welland Junior Canadians will be facing the Niagara Falls Canucks in Niagara Falls on Friday Feb. 23/2018, then they will finish the season on home ice against the Fort Erie Meteors Sunday Feb. 25/2018 at 7:00 p.m.
