Kittens killed by tragedy on QEW

NRP LogoNiagara Regional Police Service press release – On June 7/2019 at approximately 7:53 a.m. the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted by members of the public. Members of the public reported observing kittens being thrown from a Toronto bound vehicle on the Queen Elizabeth Highway near Sodom Road in Fort Erie.

Working with uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service, 2 District (Niagara Falls) office a vehicle was stopped in the area of Dorchester Road and Morrison Street in Niagara Falls. The vehicle was being driven by a lone 54-year-old woman from Fort Erie.

As a result of the subsequent investigation, it was determined that possibly three kittens had entered into the undercarriage/engine compartment of a 2013 Hyundai on their own, likely seeking warmth. The unknowing driver then began to operate her vehicle.

Tragically two kittens died as a result of falling from the moving vehicle. A third kitten was observed running away, its whereabouts are unknown.

Officers found no evidence that the kittens had been inside the drivers’ area or in contact with the driver. Further officers spoke with all the witnesses who observed seeing the kittens on the QEW, but no actual criminal act.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that no criminal charges were warranted.
