Today Neil Hamell starts an 1100 km journey that will take him through over 33 cities and towns across Ontario. He is walking for Poverty and Mental Health awareness.

“These 2 issues go hand and hand together and they severely effect and damage the lives of many in our communities,” according to his Extreme Journey website: https://extremejourney22.com/ “Statistics now show that 1 in 5 Canadians struggle with some form of mental illness and a person is almost 3x more likely to develop such illnesses in the poverty community.”

posterHis journey begins Friday April 22 in St. Catharines, meeting with Mayor Waler Sendzik at 10:30 a.m. at City Hall. From St. Catharines his journey will take him to Niagara Falls where he will spend the rest of the day before setting off on April 23 on a route that will take him through Thorold, to Hamilton, Woodstock, Toronto, Barrie, North Bay and finishing in Timmins.

“This walk is not only an awareness walk for mental health and poverty but also a personal life journey,” Hamell said in a release.” I was diagnosed at an early age with severe learning disabilities, I developed depression in my 20’s and still struggle with it, and I’ve lived in poverty all my life.”

“Six years ago I wanted to end my life but instead I devoted it to helping others and my community however I could,” he said. “I decided to do this walk to help a mental health and poverty resource centre in Timmins after finding out they were struggling to keep the doors open.”

Hamell was born in St. Catharines which is why he decided on the city as a starting point and he was raised in Timmins.

When it comes to donations, he only asks that if you know someone who could use some help, donate to them personally.

However, those who wish to support Neil Hamell in his journey, donations can be made through the Extreme Journey website: https://extremejourney22.com/
