Market set to celebrate Farmers’ Market Week in Ontario during peak of harvest season

St. Catharines Farmer's Market

City of St. Catharines press release –  – As Niagara celebrates an abundance of fresh bounty from local farms, the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market will join markets across the province to celebrate Farmers’ Market Week.

The week of Aug. 11 to 18/2019 is Farmers’ Market Week in Ontario, and residents are encouraged to celebrate by visiting the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. Each week, year-round, the market offers consumers direct access to local fresh foods, at the peak of their freshness and flavour, along with a wide variety of other items, including flowers, handmade items, VQA wines and more.

“August is the perfect time to visit the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market. Our vendors have all kinds of fresh, delicious food grown right here in Niagara,” said Deanna Chakarova, community and market coordinator. “Visiting your farmers’ market is helping make your community sustainable, and a chance to talk to the people who grow your food. Plan your visit to show your support for local agriculture and the local economy.”

From fresh fruit such as peaches, pears, plums and blueberries, to fresh vegetables such as beans, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, zucchini and more, this month is the height of the growing season in Ontario. That means markets are packed full of local bounty – some harvested just before market.

“Farmers’ markets in Ontario not only bring city people and country people together, they bring neighbours together and foster a sense of community,” said Catherine Clark, executive director of Farmers’ Markets Ontario. “Shoppers are choosing farmers’ markets for nature’s best produce, secure in the knowledge that the food is fresh, safe to eat and the next best thing to harvesting it themselves.”

Running from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Market Square, 91 King St. in downtown St. Catharines, the market is blooming this summer featuring a wide variety of vendors. On Saturdays, through to October, the market is also holding two special events, including the Market Discovery Table and Music in the Square.

“With the high-quality products our vendors offer, the talents of local musicians and activities for kids of all ages, it’s a great time to discover the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market,” said Chakarova. “Whether you’re a loyal market goer, or you have never been, we invite you to visit the market this week and see what the excitement is all about.
