Meteors season ends with win over Junior Canadians

Welland’s Matt Baumann and Fort Erie’s Matthew Minichiello battle for a loose puck in GOJHL hockey action Saturday night in Fort Erie.

The Meteors 2018/2019 regular season ended on a hard-fought-for high note with a 2 – 1 win over the Welland Junior Canadians Saturday, Feb. 23/2019, in Fort Erie.

The first period ended with the Meteors ahead 1 – 0. Cail Cirillo netted the goal at 3:11 assists went to Jayden Baldinelli and Matthew Minichiello.

Luca Marellitti scored the Meteors second goal on the power play at 17:03 in the second period, Brady Lee and Jacob Hearne assisted.

Welland’s goal came at 19:03 on the power play with 57 seconds left in the second period, assists came from Philippe Angervil and Aaron Chiarot.

The period ended with the Meteors leading 2 – 1.  Fort Erie held onto the lead through a scoreless third period.

Throughout the season, the Meteors faced the Junior Canadians seven times, the Meteors won in four of the seven games.

Last Wednesday, Feb. 20/2019, in game six of the season’s matchup with Welland, Fort Erie won 5 – 2 in Welland. Fort Erie’s goals came from Noah Bourdon, Nathan Reichel, Maro Lariccia, Brady Lee and Anthony Gigliotti. Welland’s goals came form Matt Baumann and Matthew Maidens.

Fort Erie ended in sixth place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference, Welland in seventh place. For the league standings see the GOJHL website: http://pointstreaksites.com/view/gojhl.

Welland will be finishing their season Sunday, Feb. 24/2019 in Welland against the Niagara Falls Canucks at 7 p.m.
